Our Approach to Physical Therapy
What does individualized PT look like?
Our therapist, Aaron Keeney, focuses on manual therapy first, because research has shown that freeing the fascia and muscles allows for better movement quality and less pain. He then works on muscle activation and stability, using your body’s own natural process for engaging the neuro-muscular system. Finally, strength and motor patterns are reinforced through exercise so that the new pain-free movement sticks and becomes your default way of doing things.
How does this differ from generic, corporate therapy?
You may be thinking of going to a big chain therapist or may have been unsuccessful with one before. Due to insurance requirements and profit margins, they typically only allow the therapist to see the patient for a few minutes. The rest of the session is then spent exercising with an un-licensed tech who may or may not have any experience treating your condition.
Because we do not take insurance, we can spend the entire session treating your individual, unique body. We can spend as much or as little time as needed on the types of therapy you actually need, not the treatments that will reimburse the most. It makes a big difference! Insurance also typically dictates that you end treatment after you are “good enough” by their standards. At Seastar, we will be done when you say you have reached your goal!
What to expect at your first session
Aaron Keeney, DPT, will talk to you about your pain, difficulties, and goals to get a sense of what to work on. He will then do an extensive examination of the involved body part and any other structure that may be involved. He will then perform treatments and will most likely send you home with stretches or exercises intended to bolster what has been improved. Your pain will be addressed and worked on from day one!
